Grammar rules at Stackit

Learn important grammar rules for good writing at Stackit.

Punctuation

We use standard punctuation on all body copy. Don’t use punctuation in headlines, links or buttons, unless it is necessary for comprehension. A few other considerations:

  1. Don’t use ampersands (&) or plus signs (+) in place of "and"
  2. Use the Oxford/serial comma
  3. Use en dashes (–), not hyphens, for a span or range of numbers, dates or times
  4. Don’t use spaces around em (—) dashes
  5. Set end punctuation inside closing quotation marks (ex: Harry said, “Stackit is awesome.”)

Periods

Default to using normal grammar rules and end sentences with a period for all body copy.
  1. Don’t use periods at the end of bullet point phrases
  2. Do not use a period at the end of subtitles (ex: Check out our stack)
  3. Include a period at the end of our taglines (ex: We Stack Digital. Stackit Real Good.)

Times

  1. Use numerals, a space and periods (ex: 9 a.m., 12:30 p.m.)
  2. For display copy, capitalize and remove periods (ex: 8 AM PDT | 12 PM EDT)
  3. Drop the :00 for times at the top of the hour: 10 a.m., 1 p.m.
  4. In a span, use an en dash: 8:30 a.m.–1 p.m.
  5. In running text, use words (ex: Taking place on October 7 and 8 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.)

Attributions

Here are a few handy things to remember about job titles:

  1. Capitalize job titles in pull quotes and display copy, but not in running text
  2. Abbreviate CEO, CFO, COO, CTO, VP, Sr.
  3. Don’t abbreviate uncommon acronyms, like Chief Technical Operations Officer
  4. Co-founder, not Co-Founder

Emojis

We encourage using emojis in the right place and time, such as when they can add meaning or delight to what we say. However, never use emojis in place of words in a sentence. 💜
